CULT HERO

Jon Dahl Tomasson spotted as he shares embrace with Celtic boss Postecoglou – one year on from Rangers cash dig

JON DAHL TOMASSON shared a warm embrace with Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou ahead of this afternoon’s pre-season friendly between Celtic and Blackburn Rovers.

The Dane joined the Lancashire club this summer after his departure from Malmo – and a close season link with Hibs.

It’s coming up on a year since the former AC Milan star masterminded the second half fightback with ten men which left Rangers boss Steven Gerrard floored in the Champions League qualifiers.

Ironically, the scorer of the Swedes’ two goals that night was Antonio Colak, now a RANGERS player.

Tomasson acquired cult hero status among some Celtic fans by masterminding that win – which was a body blow to the Gers hopes of landing a £40m cash bounty.

Having said that, the Gers didn’t do too badly out of their Europa League adventure – as they went all the way to the final in Seville.

But some pointed comments at a press conference from the Malmo boss captured the imagination of rival supporters.

After a 2-1 win in the first leg in Sweden, Tomasson said: “Don’t you think that they need the Champions League money here?

“I think so. I think they need that.

“I think that’s a good answer, isn’t it? I think you all are clever lads so you understand it.

“We got a good result last week but if it had been 2-0 it would have been an incredible result. Rangers are the big favourites in this game.

“If you look at the finances then we can’t compare the two teams.

“My players are motivated for a game against a very good side.

“Rangers have some excellent players and a great manager and it is good to see them back where they belong.”

Tomasson told Premier Sports today: “It’s great to be in Scotland, we know the support and the fans in the stadium.

“It is always a lovely atmosphere so it is always great to see my team play against a good side.

“We need to get minutes in the legs, I want to see those things we worked on, on the ball and off the ball.

“It’s a great preparation against a great side in a great stadium so we are looking forward to getting started.”
