Former Manchester United captain Bryan Robson is optimistic that new manager Erik ten Hag can bring success back to Old Trafford, insisting that the players already appear to be listening to his demands.

United have made an encouraging start to their pre-season preparations, winning their opening two friendlies, beating Liverpool 4-0 in Thailand on Tuesday and Melbourne Victory 4-1 in their first game in Australia on Friday. The Reds have produced no shortage of encouraging signs in both fixtures, earning plenty of early plaudits.

Despite falling behind to Victory with just five minutes on the clock, United produced another professional performance, playing a patient game before eventually breaching their deep defensive line on four occasions. There have also been several eye-catching individual performances, too, with Eric Bailly, Zidane Iqbal, Jadon Sancho and Anthony Martial earning plenty of praise for their contributions.

Although it remains very, very early days in the plan and philosophy that Ten Hag is trying to implement, Robson has been encouraged by what he has seen so far. The former midfielder is hopeful that it will result in United being able to compete for silverware again before too long.

"The club has got a tradition of bringing young lads through the academy and then being successful and winning trophies," said Robson, speaking at the launch of United's new away kit in Melbourne. "That is what the fans want to see if you're supporting a team - you want to see them being successful and winning trophies.

"Ten Hag is implementing new tactics with the players and the players seem to be taking it on board at a really early stage, so hopefully we can get back to winning ways."
