INJURY SHOCKER

HIBS have been rocked by a major injury blow on the eve of the new Premiership season.

Summer signing Aiden McGeady is facing up to THREE MONTHS on the sidelines.

The 36-year old ex-Celtic star was expected to be a huge part of Lee Johnson's Easter Road side going forward.

McGeady has suffered a recurrence of a metatarsal injury that had kept him out for a lengthy spell last season when he was with Sunderland.

It's a major setback for the Hibees who travel to Perth to take on St Johnstone in their Premiership opener on Saturday.

McGeady will be out for at least six weeks - but it could be double that if the worst fears are realised.

Johnson said: "It's a disappointing one.

"He's going to be out for a sustained period of time after aggravating his previous medial ligament injury. It's hard to put a timescale on it but it's going to be minimum six weeks, although it probably averages about 10 weeks.

"I'm disappointed for Aiden first and foremost. He's worked extremely hard to get back to a level of fitness that is capable of performing at Premiership level and unfortunately this has happened.

"It's not ideal but it's why you have a squad. Somebody else has got to fill that void on a leadership level and a performance level.

"We just do our best to recover him as quickly as possible."

The news came on the day Johnson confirmed another summer arrival - David Marshall - as his new captain.

The 37-year old former Scotland hero has been appointed 'team'captain', with Paul Hanlon stepping into a 'club captain' role.

Defender Ryan Porteous has also been installed in a 'key leadership role.'

Johnson said: "It's not really a change, to be honest.

"It's a new regime isn't it. While it's a new regime you're looking to bring the best qualities of each individual to that leadership role.

"The fact I haven't seen Hanlon kick a ball in anger yet and I've seen a lot of David Marshall over this pre-season period, it felt right."
