Former Sunderland man Aiden McGeady is facing an extended lay-off at Hibernian after the injury that wrecked his final season on Wearside flared up again. The ex-Republic of Ireland international did not kick a ball for the Black Cats after suffering a knee ligament injury in November last year, and his five-year stay at the club ended over the summer when his contract expired.

He joined Scottish Premiership side Hibs, where he was reunited with his old Sunderland boss Lee Johnson who took over at Easter Road in May. But McGeady aggravated the injury in a friendly against Norwich City on Sunday, and the 36-year-old will miss the start of Hibs' league campaign as he is expected to be out of action for at least six weeks and possibly more than two months.

"It's a disappointing one," said Johnson. "He's going to be out for a sustained period of time after aggravating his previous medial ligament injury.

"It's hard to put a timescale on it but it's going to be minimum six weeks, although it probably averages about ten weeks. I'm disappointed for Aiden first and foremost.

"He's worked extremely hard to get back to a level of fitness that is capable of performing at Premiership level and unfortunately this has happened. It's not ideal but it's why you have a squad.

"Somebody else has got to fill that void on a leadership level and a performance level. We just do our best to recover him as quickly as possible."
