Mikey Johnston in Celtic transfer exit limbo as Standard Liege hold fire on 'concrete' loan offer
The forward has tumbled down the pecking order at Parkhead and has found game time limited under Ange Postecoglou.
Forgotten Celtic winger Mikey Johnston is facing a nervy wait to see is Standard Liege firm up their interest in a loan, according to reports.
The winger signed a five-year contract with the Hoops in December 2019 as he burst onto the scene at Celtic, but has found it difficult to continue that momentum with his Parkhead career derailed by multiple injury problems in Glasgow's east end. The 23-year-old was on the fringes under Ange Postecoglou as the club surged to the Scottish Premiership title with his last competitive appearance coming back in March against Dundee United in a 14 minute cameo.
While Johnston has been handed game time in pre-season, the Scotland under-21 cap faces an uphill battle to hold down a first-team spot with Jota, Daizen Maeda, James Forrest and Liel Abada ahead of him in the pecking order. A loan exit looks to be on the cards to allow Johnston to prove his fitness away from Celtic Park.
It has been claimed Standard Liege and former boss Ronny Deila have offered Johnston the chance to kickstart his career, however reports in Belgium state a formal offer has not been put on the table. HBVL state that Johnston is among a list of targets for Deila.
They note that while his name is "on the table" this summer, that has "not yet come to a concrete proposal." Suitors in the English Championship and League One have also been linked with the forward.
