Aston Villa have been linked with a move for Watford winger Ismaila Sarr.

The club were reported to have reached an “agreement” with Watford over a fee in the region of £21million plus bonuses. It is claimed that talks are ongoing over personal terms for the forward who has played a key role for the Hornets since joining from Rennes in 2019.

Sarr, 24, recorded five goals and two assists for Watford last season during an injury-hit campaign but registered 23 goal contributions as the club earned their return to the top-flight in 2021. The Senegal international has produced a goal and assist so far this season but has missed his side’s last two games with injury.

The reports emerged on Saturday evening after Villa fell to a 3-1 away defeat to Crystal Palace. Steven Gerrard ’s side had taken an early lead through Ollie Watkins but a brace from Wilfired Zaha and a second-half goal from Jean-Philippe Mateta ensured that Patrick Vieira’s team claimed three points.

The nature of the defeat had sections of Villa fans calling for midfield reinforcements as well as a replacement for the recently-injured Diego Carlos at centre-back, leading to some hesitancy over a deal for Sarr . However, others took the reports surrounding Sarr to speculate on a positive change of system and a player that could occupy Bertrand Traore’s space in the squad.

@Alex_Berwick: If you just watched Villa at Palace and think Sarr is the answer to our problems, then I think you are crackers. Good player. But what are we gonna do with the other five expensive attackers we’ve got?

@TheChillVillan: Sarr signing (hopefully) makes perfect sense to me Allows us to stop playing this stupid system that isn't working

@AVFCTranstweet: Sarr is class, but unless you reinforce the middle nothing will improve. For me we go with a double pivot and find someone who can play alongside Kamara.

@INTER_VILLA_: Many AVFC fans saying that a CB + No.8 are more pressing issues than a winger. That might be the case. But apart from Bailey we lack serious pace. Sarr is as quick as they come. Would give us far more flexibility within games and allow us to play with more width. No-brainer.

@avfcIewis: Sarr is genuinely a quality player, blitzing pace and has a real goal scoring instinct with the way he can lash a ball and with his runs.

@floyd100479: If we are going for Sarr, that is direct replacement for Berty. Now we need a top drawer 8 and CB.

@ThatGarateyjc: Sarr will be a good signing given his quality but im not sure he solves the bigger problems.
