KIERAN Trippier, a man who has played against and alongside some of the best players in the world, has given his Newcastle United team mate Allan St Maximin a ringing endorsement after the Frenchman’s scintillating display against Manchester City.

St Maximin was at the heart of all three of Newcastle’s goals in their 3-3 draw with Manchester City at St James Park as he produced one of his best performances for the club.

In the early months of his Newcastle spell, Trippier spoke at length on the True Geordie Podcast with some of the conversation surrounding St Maximin’s potential. The defender’s assessment is that the Frenchman can be guilty of being impetuous on the ball at times and attempt to do to much but has so much ability and skill.

Trippier, who also played a key role scoring an outstanding free-kick in the draw with the reigning champions, told Sky Sports: “He’s the type of player where he gets everybody on the edge of their seat. When he plays like this, same last season against Everton at home, it gives everybody a big boost around them.

“I will just keep saying it to him. Keep playing like this week in, week out. He’s a top quality players, he’s shown today what he is all about and I am absolutely delighted that he is my team mate.

“He’s unbelievable. I say to him every single day in training you should realise the ability that you’ve got because you’re such a top quality player. He gets us up the pitch, he wins us matches and today, he was a threat throughout the game.

“For him, it’s just about being consistent because he is an unbelievable player."

The 25-year-old has made 94 appearances for the Magpies and scored 12 goals since his permanent switch from Nice in 2019.

However, Newcastle are on a different path to the one the club was previously on when he first entered the club under the new Saudi PIF backed regime at the club.

With lofty ambitions to be playing Champions League football and challenging for titles in the years to come, St Maximin may well be able to prove his worth at the top level whilst on Tyneside.

Alongside Trippier, he is leaning on one of the most experienced players in the game. The 31-year-old full-back is a World Cup semi finalist, a European Championship runner-up, a Champions League runner-up and a La Liga winner with Atletico Madrid.

St Maximin said: “To be honest, I improve a lot in the way that I play. I listen a lot to my friend (Trippier) and what he say to me. He played for very good clubs, he played for the England national team and he help me a lot.

“I just try to give my best to try and play with my ability to show the world what I am capable of doing. I will keep going to do that.”
