SPECULATION continues to mount over the future of Sunderland boss Alex Neil with the 41-year-old set to hold talks with Stoke City over their vacant manager’s position.

Following Michael O’Neill’s sacking yesterday, Neil is the current favourite to take over the club and it’s understood he has been given permission to speak to the Potters about the role. He is currently installed as the bookmakers favourite to take over at the Bet 365 Stadium.

He is currently on a 12 month rolling contract at the Stadium of Light that was due to come to an end in February next year.

Neil was due to speak to the media this morning in a press conference scheduled for 9am. After a 45 minute wait, the conference was rescheduled for 2pm.

The news is bad timing for Sunderland who are making preparations for tomorrow’s lunchtime kick-off against Norwich City.

Neil has enjoyed a successful six months on Wearside steering them to League One promotion last season. The Black Cats have got off to a strong start to their Championship campaign with one defeat out of five.
