Sunderland supporters have been reacting on Twitter after it was revealed that Alex Neil has entered discussion with Stoke City regarding their current managerial vacancy.

Stoke sacked Michael O’Neill yesterday, with his last game proving to be a defeat against the Black Cats at the Bet365 Stadium last Saturday. Neil missed this morning’s press conference, which was then rescheduled to 2pm this afternoon. The club have now released a statement confirming the suspicions regarding Neil’s future.

The statement read: “Sunderland AFC can confirm that Alex Neil has entered into discussions with Stoke City regarding their current managerial vacancy. Following a formal approach by SCFC, the club is contractually obliged to permit the Head Coach to start a dialogue with the Potters.

“The club is committed to retaining Alex’s services as head coach and will be making no further comment at this moment in time.” Here is how Sunderland supporters have reacted to the news on social media.

@braddfearnleyy We can’t ever be happy it’s ridiculous.

@williamsSAFC Can you advise who to speak to with regard to cancelling direct debits for season cards.

@p0rksavage If he goes, I think Stewart leaves and there are many other players that say his coaching levels are second to none. Morale out of nowhere hits rock bottom! He is worth millions in terms of what he could do for us over the next 3-4 years, criminal he was not given a longer deal.

@AsafcHarrison As much as I like AN as manager, he’s obviously not showing us any commitment. We wouldn’t accept it from a player, he’s no different. He can’t come back after this regardless if he takes that job or not.

@kylemurg If he goes you’ll sharply get an email saying my season ticket is cancelled.

@KallanGibbon Nice one lads, a day before a massive game and the squads morale through the roof.

@bigtone59 So it was in his contract to be allowed to speak to anyone else who wanted to employ him? The fact he’s agreed to them suggests he’s not happy with something or someone.

@DanMeister1234 This is a mess of your own making. You’ve not backed him properly and he’s been suggesting that a few more signings have needed to be made. Plus you’ve given him a rolling contract which hardly screams commitment. If Neil goes then this board have some serious questions to answer.
