Manchester United should have scored far earlier than they did against Southampton but were denied by heroic saves and blocks from Gavin Bazunu and his defence.

The Red Devils beat the Saints 1-0 in a Saturday lunchtime kick-off that threatened to cause them problems.

Erik ten Hag's side made a bright start to the game but struggled to make the breakthrough against a heroic Saints' defence.

Approaching the midway point in the first half, a cross into the box was played to Bruno Fernandes who found Anthony Elanga who looked certain to find the net from a tight angle.

However a wonderful stop from former Manchester City youngster Gavin Bazunu kept his effort out from point-blank range.

The danger wasn't cleared though, with Fernandes having another effort that was blocked by Kyle Walker-Peters, before Christian Eriksen forced the Southampton defence into action for a third time, only to be blocked by Armel Bella-Kotchap.

The defensive play earned a standing ovation from the home fans at St Mary's Stadium, and led to talkSPORT co-commentator Dean Ashton comparing Bazunu to a member of the Marvel franchise.

He told talkSPORT: "Gavin 'Spiderman Bazunu', incredible, he blocks one, two, Eriksen should score.

"When it comes back to him he just needs to pick a spot.

"It's just brilliant all round defensively there, throwing bodies in the way."

Eventually they did find a winner with Fernandes striking home a fine goal from a Diogo Dalot cross in the second half.
