Newcastle mock rivals Sunderland with sly tweet just hours after Alex Neil's departure

Newcastle United were quick to mock their bitter Tyneside rivals Sunderland after Alex Neil walked out of the Black Cars for Stoke City on Sunday afternoon

Newcastle United have fired shots at their Tyneside rivals, Sunderland, after Alex Neil left the Black Cats on Sunday afternoon.


Just five games into the Championship season, Sunderland have seen their boss poached by Stoke City. And the Magpies were quick to rub in the misfortune of their bitter rivals with a cheeky tweet just hours after his departure.


Sunderland had tweeted a snap of Alex Neil with the caption 'Our Gaffer' after the Black Cats beat Stoke earlier this month. And Newcastle took to social media to post a snap of Eddie Howe with the same caption after Newcastle won and Neil walked.

“First and foremost, we want to thank Alex for his contribution to Sunderland AFC,” said Sunderland's sporting director, Kristjaan Speakman.

“The impact he made is clear and he played an integral role in our promotion last season. Despite signing revised terms earlier this month and receiving an offer to further improve his contract on Friday, Alex felt this was an opportunity that he wanted to pursue.

“We are extremely disappointed by his departure, but we ultimately respect his decision and we wish him well. The process to appoint a new head coach is underway.”

Newcastle, on the other hand, are currently flying high in the Premier League.

The nouveau-riche side are currently seventh in the table, and they remain unbeaten in the league. However, out of their first four games, the Toon Army have drawn three.
