It’s transfer deadline day at Bodymoor Heath as Aston Villa have one final attempt to strengthen their squad for the season ahead. It’s been the worst start to the season in 25 years after four defeats and a solitary win from the first five games.

Steven Gerrard, meanwhile, is becoming increasingly under pressure and said so himself after Villa’s latest defeat to Arsenal last night. “I’m well aware of where we are at and I don’t like how the table looks,” he said, with Villa in 19th. “I’m sure my players don’t and I know the fans don’t so we all need to stick together. I think it’s natural if the pressure builds, I was asked that last weekend in terms of the Villa fans’ reaction and I take that on my shoulders, I take full responsibility, I won’t shirk that.”

Today, though, promises to be a busy one back at Villa’s Bodymoor Heath base with the club having an interest in West Ham’s Craig Dawson, Jan Bednarek of Southampton, Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher while, overnight, Villa held talks with Wolves over the signing of their Belgian midfielder Leander Dendoncker. Tottenham winger Lucas Moura is also on Villa’s radar ahead of a deadline-day deal.

Elsewhere, Douglas Luiz is wanted by a host of clubs with Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Atletico Madrid holding an interest. BirminghamLive, meanwhile, was told of strong interest from Liverpool just yesterday while Sky Sports are reporting that one club will table a £20million offer to Villa later today.

On Douglas’ precarious situation, Gerrard stated: “I’m not in control of that. There’s two people, well, there's more than two people who are in control of that, but I'm certainly not one of them.

“That will be Douglas, that will be his agent and that will be what happens around that. I’d like to keep him, he’s a fantastic player, I’ve made that abundantly clear.

“We are not in a position where we need to lose our top players, but at the same time Douglas has a year to go and it is one of those really touchy situations where the club has to do what is best for the club, not necessarily what is best for me.”
