Rangers flop Umar Sadiq suffers nightmare injury blow just days after sensational Real Sociedad transfer

UMAR SADIQ has been dealt a huge injury blow less than a fortnight after signing for Real Sociedad.

The Nigerian joined the La Liga giants in a sensational switch earlier this month after attracting interest from a host of top European clubs during his spells at Partizan Belgrade and Almeria.

His rise in form came as a surprise to Scottish football fans as the ex-Rangers flop failed to deliver at Ibrox during his stint on loan from Italian outfit Roma under Steven Gerrard in 2019.

He spent six months at the Gers but made just four appearances for the club in what was considered a very underwhelming transfer.

Sadiq revived his career in Serbia though and it led him to make the move to Spain as he signed for Almeria.

Then Real Sociedad came calling in a big money deal to snatch up the 25-year-old this month after helping guide Almeria to the top flight this season - scoring 19 during last year's campaign.

And the striker couldn't have asked for a better start following his £17million deal after enjoying a dream debut against Atletico Madrid.

He came off the bench in the second half to score their equalising goal in their 1-1 draw.

Sadiq then started their opening Europa League fixture against Man Utd, before returning to domestic action to face Getafe yesterday afternoon.

He only managed 40 minutes though and needed to be replaced after suffering a nasty knee injury.

Now the Spanish club have announced that the forward has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament.

And while it is unclear how long he will be on the sidelines for, they have revealed that he will require surgery.

A statement on their website read: "Sadiq Umar suffered a right knee sprain during the Getafe-RS match, held yesterday.

"After the tests carried out today on the player, he has been diagnosed with a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in the right leg. He will a start a physiotherapy treatment.

"However, he will undergo surgical treatment. Further information will be provided in the coming days."
