Park Ji-sung's wife Kim Min-ji has recalled his "sweet but embarrassing" reaction to Manchester United's victory against arch-rivals Liverpool.

The South Korean, 41, racked up more than 200 appearances for the Red Devils during a glittering seven-year stint at Old Trafford, claiming four Premier League titles, three League Cups and the Champions League in 2008, but has been forced to watch on from the sidelines during their steady decline over the last decade.

Sold by legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson to QPR before the start of the 2012/13 season, the campaign in which United recorded their last top-flight crown, Park lasted just one season in west London before seeing out his career on loan at PSV.

Coined "Three-Lungs" Park by team-mates for his never-ceasing stamina whilst at the Theatre of Dreams, the disciplined midfielder still enjoys a close affiliation to his former club - personified by his hilarious reaction to United's 2-1 win over Liverpool last month.

"We were dropping the kids off and got in an elevator," explained Park's wife when translated from their native Korean. "I've never seen him get this excited for anything. So I ask him 'what happened?'

"Then he goes 'we actually won'. He wasn't this excited even when we [South Korea] beat Germany [2-0 at the 2018 World Cup]."

While Park's love for United has been praised by supporters online, fans also believe his wild celebrations for a 2-1 win are a sad indictment of the club's current position.

"The fact that she said he wasn’t as excited when South Korea beat Germany made me realise that SAF (Sir Alex Ferguson) is a miracle maker for instilling this culture into the club and making people love the club," commented one supporter.

"One of my favourite players...but it's quite sad that nowadays beating Liverpool is a shock instead of being an expectation. Hopefully we're on the rise again," harked a second.

"One of my favourite players. I miss the days when players were willing to die for the badge. Park was 100% effort," hailed a third. Whilst a fourth posted: "Equally as sweet as it is embarrassing."

Sitting in the relegation zone prior to the game against Liverpool, Erik ten Hag's men were considered huge underdogs against a side that had gone within inches of claiming a historic quadruple the previous season.

However, goals from Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford inspired the newly installed Dutch boss to his first scalp of the new era with a 2-1 win against Jurgen Klopp's men.
