The injury to Boubacar Kamara could have been much worse, says well-respected football doctor and physio Rajpal Brar. The French international is said to be in Dubai receiving further treatment after it was confirmed by Aston Villa that the midfielder sustained knee ligament damage.

The injury came about during a coming together with Southampton’s Mohamed Elyounoussi last week, with Kamara appearing to jarr his right knee as he contested a 50-50 challenge. Details of Kamara’s setback remain scant, though, with L’Equipe in France suggesting the 22-year-old will be out for two months, meaning the ex-Marseille man’s World Cup hopes are all but dashed.

It’s understood that Kamara has damaged his MCL, or medial collateral ligament, and not his anterior cruciate ligament which, as we know, did for Wesley back in January 2020. Last season, Marvelous Nakamba and Ezri Konsa both picked up knee ligament injuries, with the latter returning way ahead of schedule in pre-season.

Gerrard had initially ruled Konsa out for a 16-week period after he was forced off against Crystal Palace in May but, as we know, made a miraculous playing return against Brisbane Roar two months ahead of schedule while also starting on the opening day of the season against Bournemouth. Nakamba, meanwhile, was out for four months with his knee injury last term.

Offering an insight into the damage Kamara has sustained, Dr Brar told BirminghamLive : “Based on the mechanism of the injury and the follow-up reports, it’s very likely he’s damaged his MCL, or medial collateral ligament. This is one of the primary knee ligaments that helps stabilise against valgus inward force.

“Recent reports have said his return time will be eight-plus weeks and, based on that, it’s very likely he has either a high grade II MCL tear or a grade III full rupture. In either case, it’s likely he’ll be out for the World Cup and, therefore, will be back in January.

“The good news here however is that the MCL heals extremely well for knee ligaments because it has a robust blood supply.”
