Speaking on The Overlap, Paul Scholes has named Anfield and St James’ Park as his two favourite away stadiums to play at.
As a Manchester United player during the Red Devils’ most successful spell in history, Scholes doesn’t really have too many horror stories to share from away day defeats, but interestingly, he’s chosen two of United’s biggest rivals as his favourite teams to visit.
Newcastle, in the mid-90s, were United’s closest rivals when it came to challenging for the Premier League title, while historically, Liverpool are United’s biggest rivals within the game.

Scholes loved Newcastle and found Anfield difficult but enjoyable
Scholes named Anfield and St James’ Park as the two stadiums he most enjoyed playing at.
“I always loved playing at Newcastle. Liverpool and Newcastle. Liverpool was harder, there was never space, but atmosphere wise and as big of a game as it was, you know, if you went there and you won,” Scholes said.
Two of the best
We can’t blame Scholes one bit for naming these two stadiums as his favourites to play at.
Newcastle fans and Liverpool supporters are amongst two of the most ravenous fanbases on the planet, and while it must be hostile to play there as an opposition player, it’s surely an unforgettable experience.
Scholes won’t have had many friendly greetings on either Merseyside or Tyneside, but as he says, winning in those types of atmospheres is all the sweeter.
Silencing either the Kop or the Gallowgate End must be one of the most satisfying feelings you can have as a footballer, and luckily for Scholes, he was able to achieve that feat on numerous occasions during his career.
