Celtic ace Tony Ralston ready to answer Scotland SOS for crunch Ukraine clash

STEVE CLARKE has every right to feel he’s cursed having lost FOUR top-class full-backs during this international break.

But the Scotland boss’ last men standing can still cast a spell on Ukraine on Tuesday night.

Stand-ins Tony Ralston and Greg Taylor look set to start the crunch clash in Krakow.

The pair could be pressed into action after a horror run of bad luck struck skipper Andy Robertson, Nathan Patterson, Kieran Tierney and Aaron Hickey.

Robbo was forced out of the squad with a knee problem, while fellow left-back Tierney got a head knock in Saturday’s win over the Republic of Ireland.

Rookie Patterson suffered suspected ligament damage in last Wednesday’s victory over Ukraine.

His replacement Hickey then limped off against the Irish to compound Clarke’s woes.

It leaves Celtic mates Ralston and Taylor as Clarke’s only options for the rematch with Ukraine in Poland.

Ralston, who came on against the Irish, said: “It’s unfortunate for the boys and not something you want to see happen.

“Hopefully the lads are OK and we can get some of them back fit for the game on Tuesday night. If not, they will be big misses.

"But the main thing is we are together as a squad, even the boys who haven’t been involved in the first couple of matches.

“The training sessions have been good. That’s what you have to do, be ready to go in if required.

“We’re strong as a squad. The strength in depth is brilliant.

“If you get the chance then you just have to believe in yourself. That’s important in your career, regardless of what level you’re at.

“Greg Taylor is like myself. There is a lot of competition in his position.

“But he did brilliantly when he came on. He’s had a great start to the season with Celtic as well, so I’m very pleased for him.”

Ralston, 23, has made a seamless transition from club to international football. He again looked right at home when he replaced Hickey.

The Hoops right-back added: “It is just about gaining experience.

"I have been fortunate enough to play for my country before and that helped me on Saturday night when I came on.

“It’s tough to come into a game like that, but you have to stay ready for whenever you are required. That is just part and parcel of football.
