Wolverhampton Wanderers target Jason Denayer is poised to complete a free transfer to United Arab Emirates side Shabab Al-Ahli.

The Belgian defender was targeted by Wolves during the summer transfer window after he left Lyon at the end of last season. But Wolves weren't able to reach an agreement with Denayer, who was identified as a potential replacement for Willy Boly after his move to Nottingham Forest.

Wolves head coach Bruno Lage addressed interest in Denayer by saying: "I know him very well. You are talking about a centre-back that I know very well, I played against him in the Champions League.

"We are talking about a player who has played in the Champions League and for his national team. Let's see what can happen. I have a good opinion about him. I played two times against him in the Champions League when I was at Benfica."

Wolves shelved plans to sign Denayer shortly after Diego Costa joined the club as a free agent to replace the injured Sasa Kalajdzic. However, Lage asked club chiefs to look into signing a new centre-back after Nathan Collins was sent off in the 3-0 defeat to Manchester City last time out.

Collins now faces a three-game ban, meaning he will miss matches against West Ham, Chelsea and Nottingham Forest. Lage only has inexperienced duo Toti Gomes and Yerson Mosquera to choose from beyond first choice pairing Collins and Max Kilman.

Denayer won't be joining Wolves now with reports that he is set to fly to the UAE imminently and complete a switch to Shabab Al-Ahli. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano said: "Shabab Al Ahli are closing in on Jason Denayer deal. Agreement now imminent with Belgian centre back available as free agent, sources close to club confirm. Denayer will fly to UAE in the next hours to discuss final details and then sign the contract."
