Former midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger is calling on Manchester United to improve in just about every way possible following their 6-3 derby day defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Despite making the short hop across the city on a run of four consecutive Premier League victories, United had no answer for their neighbours' superior quality, finding themselves 4-0 down by the half time interval. Two goals apiece from Phil Foden and Erling Haaland had given Erik ten Hag's side a mountain to climb by the break.

Antony marked his second Premier League appearance with a second goal in United colours, bending home a delicious effort from distance to reduce the arrears, before Haaland and Foden each completed their hat-tricks to put Pep Guardiola's troops 6-1 in front with a little under 20 minutes left on the clock. Substitute Anthony Martial completed the scoring, pulling two goals back for the Reds late on.

Despite the late rally, United were outclassed by their cross-city rivals once again, meaning they have now conceded 10 goals in their last two meetings with City. And for former United player Schweinsteiger, Erik ten Hag must implement a dramatic improvement at Old Trafford, if United are to become the dominant force in Manchester once again.

"We were totally defeated in every aspect today," Schweinsteiger said on his Twitter account. "Now it's time for Manchester United to improve in so many parts to show who the real club in Manchester is soon."

On his side's battering, Ten Hag said: "I am very disappointed, especially at the lack of belief. I didn't expect it.

"In the [previous] games, yes some weeks ago, our team was confident, there was a good spirit, there was a good vibe and today we didn't bring it on the pitch from the first minute at all. The vibe hasn't gone [definitively] but today they didn't bring the belief on the pitch."
