Robinho 'asked to be extradited by Italy' to serve nine-year jail term for gang rape

Robinho lost his final appeal against a nine-year conviction for gang rape back in January and Italy's justice ministry has now asked Brazilian authorities to extradite him

Robinho lost his final appeal against a conviction for gang rape earlier this year and the Italian justice ministry has now asked Brazilian authorities for his extradition.

The 38-year-old's conviction was confirmed by an appeals court in 2020 after he and five others were found guilty in 2017, in January the Supreme Court in Rome upheld the previous ruling that sentenced him to nine years in jail.

The former Real Madrid, Manchester City and Brazil forward was involved in a 2013 rape of an Albanian women in a Milan nightclub during his time with AC Milan.

With the Supreme Court's ruling being definitive, Robinho, who has since returned to live in Brazil, has been called to return to Italy.

ESPN report that The Ministry of Justice of Italy have asked for the extradition of Robinho from Brazil as well as Ricardo Falco - who was also involved in the incident.

The report adds that the four other people have not been traced by Italian authorities - and have therefore not been the subject of prosecution.

However, despite the request from Italian officials, the Brazilian Constitution does not allow their nationals to be extradited from their home country.

Robinho, who returned for a fourth spell with Santos in 2020 before his contract was suspended, admitted to having "contact" with the woman.

He claimed that although he couldn't speak for them, his friends has consensual sexual intercourse with her after he had left.

Robinho, real name Robson de Souza, joined City from Real Madrid back in 2008 but only made 53 appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring 16 goals.

Having spent three years in Spain after leaving Brazil, he went on to leave England for Italy with AC Milan where he spent four seasons and won Serie A.

Before his final spell with Santos, Robinho spent time with Guangzhou Evergrande, Atletico Mineiro, Sivasspor and Istanbul Basaksehir.
