A fresh twist has emerged in Wolves’ search for a new boss, with Pedro Martins still said to be eager to take up the role.

Martins emerged as an early frontrunner to replace Bruno Lage, with the former Olympiacos head coach reported to be Wolves ' number one choice, according to the Daily Mirror.

A compatriot of several of Wolves’ players, the former Portugal international has also worked with a number of the squad in the past. A three-time Greek League winner, he managed both Daniel Podence and Jose Sa during their time at Olympiacos and has close links to Jorge Mendes’ agency Gestifute.

He initially turned down Hull City’s advances but appeared to have a change of heart in midweek, flying in to attend their Championship game at home to Wigan Athletic.

The 52-year-old was pictured with Hull owner Acun Ilicali ahead of the 2-1 win and was reported to have verbally agreed a deal to take over at the MKM Stadium.

He was set to be unveiled to the players today after flying back to Portugal to pick up his belongings.

However, the Tigers revealed this morning that they will not be pursuing a deal with the Portuguese, saying: “We have been unable to reach a mutually agreeable position so we have made the decision to cancel negotiations.”

Picking up on the announcement, Ryan Taylor at the Daily Express had a theory behind Martins’ latest U-turn, saying: “one source suggests he is hoping to speak to Wolves”.

It would appear that ship may already have sailed, however, with Julen Lopetegui now as short as 1/10 to take over at Molineux.
