Former Premier League striker Stan Collymore has called for Wolverhampton Wanderers to hire an Englishman as Bruno Lage's successor.

Lage, 46, departed the club last Sunday following the 2-0 loss to West Ham United, which had resulted in Wolves slipping into the bottom three after a poor start to the season.

Wolves have just one win to their name across the opening nine fixtures of the season, with their fifth loss recorded yesterday after goals from Kai Havertz, Christian Pulisic and Armando Broja secured all three points for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Steve Davis acted as the interim boss for Wolves in that fixture but will likely be replaced in the coming days, as the search for Lage's successor ramps up. A role which Collymore, who was released by Wolves in 1989, believes should be given to an 'Englishman' moving forward.

"Wolves really is a great club and I would love to see the manager’s job go to an Englishman following Bruno Lage’s dismissal," said Collymore.

"An Englishman who sees it as a four or five-year project and not just a stepping stone to a bigger job. It frustrates me that Wolves can be seen that way by both players and coaches.

"I hope the powers that be at Molineux can change all that and make it a destination club once again."
