Cardiff City news as Bluebirds savour another derby day success and Kipre talks up defensive partnership

The latest news from the Cardiff City Stadium

Jack Leahy scored the winner for Cardiff City in a thrilling South Wales Derby

Here's your round-up of all the latest Cardiff City headlines for Tuesday, October 11.

Leahy seals another derby success

Jack Leahy's late screamer earned Cardiff City the bragging rights and all three points in a seven-goal thriller against 10-man Swansea City in the mini-South Wales derby.

It was a proper, all-action derby affair, with James Crole putting the Bluebirds in command with an early double. However, a Joel Cotterill penalty got the visitors back into the tie, before Josh Thomas saw red and was sent for an early shower after raising his hands towards Bluebirds keeper Matt Turner.

But Swansea came back stronger after going down to 10 men and the towering Wasiri Williams sent two headers into Cardiff's net either side of half time to hand the Swans the lead.

However, Isaac Jefferies slotted home neatly late on in the second half to get the hosts back on terms. And it was set up for someone to make themselves a hero and Leahy did just that. As the clock ticked towards the allotted 90 minutes, Leahy hit a crisp strike from 25 yards which nestled into the top corner and earned the Bluebirds the derby win in Leckwith.

The result means Cardiff have claimed derby wins at under-18s, women's and u-21s level this season, with the first team going for glory on October.

Kipre - I love playing with Perry

West Brom loanee Cedric Kipre has spoken of how much he is relishing his burgeoning centre-back partnership with Perry Ng and has dismissed suggestions his partner's lack of height is a hindrance.

"I love playing with Perry; I like his game and I like the way he plays. As a centre back, he likes to play on the floor and he's always asking for the ball," Kipre said in the Bluebirds match programme last week.

"Defensively as well, he's great. Even though he's not the tallest, he always wins the duels when he goes up in the air, so I don't think it's a problem for him! He's a great defender and we work well together.

"Overall, I think as a team we have been OK defensively, but on some key moments, like corners and set pieces, that's where I think we need to be stronger as a team."

Whitts match pencilled in for earlier kick-off

Cardiff City have confirmed that the Peter Whittingham Memorial Match will now kick-off at the earlier time of 7pm.

The Bluebirds are set to host Aston Villa on November 30, with the fixture set to formally mark the launch of the PW7 Foundation, which was established in Peter's memory.

Peter’s elder brother James and wife, Amanda recently spoke candidly about the reasons behind the Memorial Match and the foundation.

“We sat down [as a family and with the club] and thought a lot about this game,” James said. "I think most are familiar with the circumstances surrounding [Peter’s] funeral and the fact that there were only four or five members of his close family there due to the circumstances we found ourselves in with the Covid Pandemic. So, I suppose we never really had the celebration of his life that we would have wanted and, also, we have this idea of legacy and establishing that for his boys, Amanda, and the family.

“Peter was always first to comment on how fortunate he was and how lady luck had shined on him and how his life evolved; many will say Peter gave a lot, but he always felt he received a lot back. We wanted to give back via the PW7 Foundation to some of those establishments that Peter benefitted from during his life."
