Qatar's emir has thanked Russia and its president Vladimir Putin for helping the Gulf nation organise this year’s World Cup, and said he is ‘proud’ of the countries’ relationship.
Russia, which hosted the last World Cup in 2018, has been banned from almost all football outside its borders since invading Ukraine in February.
But at a summit in Kazakhstan Thursday, Sheik Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani said to Putin: ‘After Russia made a great success in organising the 2018 World Cup, Russian friends have provided great support to Qatar, especially in organisation, for the 2022 World Cup.

‘We thank you for this and we are proud of this relationship. This will continue until the end of the World Cup. I’m very happy to see you, Mr President. Thank you.’
The emir added that Qatar has ‘strong and historic relations with Russia’. With 37 days to go until the first World Cup in an Arab country, neither leader would say what the assistance entailed but Putin said: ‘Russia is doing everything we can in terms of transferring the experience of preparing for the World Cup.
'I’m sure that it will be a success.’

The 2022 World Cup is set to get underway in the Gulf Nation at the end of November
