Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa has been playing with a fractured wrist, interim manager Steve Davis has confirmed.

The Portugal international has been ever-present for Wolves in the Premier League this season, but it has now been revealed that he has been playing through the pain. Sa has an injury to his wrist which Wolves’ medical team have allowed him play on with.

Sa, who has kept three clean sheets in nine matches this term, is expected to keep goal for Wolves in their crucial match with Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Speaking at his press conference on Friday, Davis said: “Most of the players that are playing tomorrow will have something - not necessarily a broken wrist. I think it’s important to know that there’s different pain elements to that, different bones in the wrist that are less likely to break than others or less of a problem.

“In the end the medical staff, the coach and the player will sit down and make a decision whether that player can carry on with that particular injury. There are all variations of injuries you can pick up, and in this case that was the situation.

“If the player, coach and medical team are comfortable that he can play with that, then that’s what happens. I’ve played with broken toes in the past. It’s pain tolerance and how much you can stand.

“I’m not sure where he is at the moment with it, but I know previously that that was a problem. Those decisions are made by the medical team and the coach at the time.”

Sa’s performance levels have dipped this season and he was criticised for failing to stop Kai Havertz’s opening goal in last weekend’s defeat to Chelsea. But Davis has hailed last season’s player of the year for battling on.

“It shows his character,” he added. “As a goalkeeper you are always in the firing line because you’re the last line. For him to do that and just get on with it shows the courage and determination he’s got to turn things around. It’s a good example to the others. We need everybody available at the moment.”
