Luis Figo reveals what stopped him signing for Liverpool after Real Madrid exit

Former Barcelona and Real Madrid star Luis Figo has revealed how close he was to moving to Liverpool at the age of 32

Luis Figo has revealed a transfer to Liverpool was close and he would have "liked to have gone" to Anfield from Real Madrid.


Then aged 32, Figo's time at Madrid was coming to an end and the Portuguese star was searching for a new club - and that could very well have been Liverpool if they'd have acted faster in securing his services.


As it happened, Liverpool didn't manage to complete the deal with Figo and the man at the centre of the most controversial transfer in football history made the switch to Inter Milan instead.

In an interview with the Guardian, the first Galactico spoke of how close he came to being a Liverpool player back in 2005: "I would have liked to go.

“We talked a lot. One week they say, ‘No, wait, we can’t do it just now’ and then they sign a player. Then, ‘Wait a few more days, we need to sort this first’ and they sign another. I think: ‘Bloody hell, are you messing with me, or what?’

"Inter appear, I go to Milan, meet [the club president Massimo] Moratti and take the decision. I loved Inter, it was exactly what I needed.”

Figo linking up with Steven Gerrard at Anfield would have been the stuff of dreams and would have given the Premier League a glimpse of another world star, but the transfer to Liverpool wasn't to be - much to the disappointment of the former Barcelona and Madrid star.
