Football fans are going crazy over Marcus Edwards' stunning goal in the Champions League after the Tottenham Hotspur academy reject bagged against his former side.

Featuring just once for Spurs' senior side, a 15-minute League Cup cameo at home to Bristol Rovers, Edwards was once likened to a young Lionel Messi by former boss Mauricio Pochettino due to his close-touch control and mazy runs forward. However, the 5ft 6 maestro suffered a serious ankle injury shortly after his debut and found first-team opportunities limited once he returned to full fitness.

Flogged to Vitoria de Guimaraes in 2019, the inverted winger impressed in northern Portugal with his creativity and earned a move to Sporting Lisbon at the start of the year.

Returning to north London to face his former side in the Champions League, Edwards shocked the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium by netting a sensational opener, firing the ball into the bottom right corner from distance.

The former England U20 ace then wheeled away in celebration, lapping up the appreciation from his team-mates and also sending fans wild on social media. "How are you letting Edwards score and why is he celebrating sjdhhdjsja," jibed one supporter.

"Marcus Edwards celebrating scoring against Spurs love to see it," harked another. "Marcus Edwards. Scoring a great goal and celebrating against Tottenham. An Academy Graduate. Beautiful," commented a rival Arsenal fan.

Whilst even those in N17 couldn't critise Edwards for making the most of the moment. "People slating Edwards for celebrating are too funny. He’s s*** on us in both games whilst our youth team hasn’t won a game in years it seems and are starting players like Lucas in 2022," hailed a Spurs supporter.

Edwards' stunning opener was cancelled out by Rodrigo Bentancur's header in the 70th minute but Sporting did hang on for an unlikely away point in a crazy final few moments.

Peppering the Sporting goal throughout the second period Tottenham thought they'd claimed deserved winner when Harry Kane prodded home inside the six-yard box. But a lengthy VAR check eventually ruled close-range effort offside and while Antonio Conte was shown a straight red card, Spurs had to settle for a point.
