Arsenal star Gabriel Martinelli holds up Pablo Mari shirt after scoring as on loan defender discharged from hospital after Milan knife attack

Gabriel Martinelli held up a shirt with Pablo Mari's name on it in support of the defender was stabbed in Milan this week.

The 29-year-old, who is currently on loan at Monza, was one of six attacked at random on Thursday afternoon.

One person sadly died in the shocking incident, while Mari was among those taken by helicopter to hospital.

Martinelli quickly opened the scoring for the Gunners against Nottingham Forest, and he then proceeded to hold up the shirt.

Before the game, which they went on to win 5-0, the entire squad and staff made a similar gesture.

Mari later replied to a picture on Twitter of the Arsenal players' message with two love heart emojis.

The centre-back's injuries were not life threatening, but he still required surgery on his back.

He is expected to be out for at least two months and was discharged from hospital on Sunday.

The day after the attack, Mari said on Instagram: "After the hard moment we experienced yesterday, both my family and I want to communicate that fortunately we are all fine despite the circumstances, and we want to thank all the messages of support and affection that we are receiving.

"In addition, we want to send our condolences and all our strength to the family and friends of the deceased person, and we sincerely wish that all injured people recover as soon as possible."

The Gunners issued a club statement on Thursday night: "We are all shocked to hear the dreadful news about the stabbing in Italy, which has put a number of people in hospital including our on-loan centre-back Pablo Mari.

"We have been in contact with Pablo's agent who has told us he's in hospital and is not seriously hurt.

"Our thoughts are with Pablo and the other victims of this dreadful incident."
