Leigh Griffiths ‘wanted by Morton’ as ex-Celtic striker eyes Scottish Cup clash against his former club

LEIGH GRIFFITHS is under consideration for a January move to surprise Championship challengers Morton, it's being claimed.

And that would put him in the frame for a remarkable joust against his former club Celtic in the Scottish Cup come January.

The former Scotland striker was released by Celtic in January with six months left on his deal after signing a one-year extension at Parkhead.

He has been without a club for FIVE months now, having failed to pull up any trees in League One with Falkirk, before a short lived spell in semi-pro football out at Mandurah City in Australia.

Dougie Imrie's Cappielow men are battling it out near the top of the division - with a date at Parkhead in late January in the Scottish Cup.

That will help well the coffers at Cappielow - where Imrie is keen to add another striker to help in the title run-in.

Whether former Hoops star Griffiths fits the bill or not remains to be seen - but it's thought the Cappielow men WERE keen on the star this summer.

And now Football Scotland claims that they are keen to take him in January.

Griffiths scored two goals - including a spectacular effort from the halfway line - in a charity match for the Hanlon-Stevenson foundation only last week.

Imrie is a former coach at Livingston - where Griffiths has been given the use of training facilities under David Martindale.

But it would be a hugely risky transfer - and Imrie would have to consider whether a younger player with more recent game time would make more sense.

Griffiths told the BBC recently that he was considering RETIRING from the sport.

"The longer it goes on I think, 'Is football for me anymore?'," he said.

"I've been without a club for five months now and, although Davie [Martindale, Livingston manager] has said I can come in and train with them, he has said there is no deal on the table.

"I'm still not seeing managers pick up the phone, which means do they want me at their club or is it time to call it a day? That is something I'm still considering at the minute.

"As a free agent you've not got a budget, you've not got a price-tag on your head, everything is still negotiable."
