Club assist cops after Leigh Griffiths & Paul McGowan arrested amid investigation into ‘Dundee-Hearts match betting’

DUNDEE are helping cops after footballers Leigh Griffiths and Paul McGowan were arrested over a betting probe.

The duo were lifted in early-morning raids on their homes by detectives yesterday investigating allegations of betting on yellow cards during a Dundee-Hearts game in December last year.

Griffiths, 32, and McGowan, 35 were among those booked during the match, which Hearts won 1-0.

Former Hibs and Celtic striker Griffiths has since left his loan spell at Dundee but McGowan remains at Dens Park.

A spokesperson for the club said: “Dundee Football Club are aware of the ongoing Police Scotland investigation as reported in the media.

“The club will support the authorities with their inquiries and will not be making any further statement at this time.”

Police Scotland confirmed the pair plus another man were all arrested yesterday morning before being released without charge pending further inquiries.

But Griffiths told BBC Scotland he had NOT been arrested despite being questioned at London Road police station near Celtic Park.

He declined to discuss the subject of the questioning.

His £675,000 home in Bothwell, Lanarkshire - currently up for sale - was raided by 10 cops at 7am.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Following a pre-planned police operation on Thursday, 1 December, three men, aged 37, 35 and 32, were arrested in the Bothwell, Bonnyrigg and Airdrie areas in connection with an investigation into alleged gambling incidents in sport.

“All three men were released without charge pending further enquiries.”

Griffiths was the first player Ange Postecoglou offered a new contract to when he took over last season.

But he quickly fell out of favour at Parkhead and was loaned out to Dundee.

He later fell out of the picture there too - and played a couple of bounce games in Australia for a lower division team earlier this year.

He’s currently without a club and training with Livingston to keep his fitness levels up.
