Cho Gue-sung in Celtic transfer boost as World Cup star's father reveals playing style advice to Europe-bound forward

The South Korean striker is the subject of interest from several European clubs following his exploits in Qatar

Celtic have been handed a major boost in their to sign South Korean World Cup hero Cho Gue-sung after his father advised him to go to a club where he can fit in, and also revealed that transfer negotiations are at an advanced stage.

Ange Postecoglou's side have been linked with a move for the Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors forward, whose South Korea side have been knocked out of the World Cup after a heavy 4-1 defeat to tournament favourites Brazil. And back in his homeland, the player's Cho Chae-hwan, was interviewed on television about any potential transfer for his son, with Fenerbache and Rennes also believed to be interested in signing him.

Cho Chae-hwan said: "The advice I have given my son is when he signs for a team abroad, go to a club that can play the way he likes, rather than choosing a club because they are a big name. He needs a club that will help him adapt and settle down to a new lifestyle on and off the pitch.

"I know his agent is in the process of finalising negotiations regarding his transfer overseas. He will certainly go to Europe. Ahead of the World Cup, I told him that this was a tournament that he had to show everyone what he could do on the pitch and I think he did that. He has had a great time at the World Cup and I am certainly very proud of him."

Cho became the first South Korean player to score two goals at a World Cup game when he netted a double against Ghana in the second game of their campaign in Group H. The Koreans had drew their opening match with Uruguay, and despite a 3-2 defeat against Ghana on matchday two, progressed to the last 16 with a famous comeback victory against Portugal in their final group game.

Should Cho Gue-sung make the move to Parkhead next month, he will become Celtic's third signing of the winter transfer window, following the captures of Japanese defender Yuki Kobayashi on a free from Vissel Kobe and wing back Canadian wing back Alistair Johnston from CF Montreal.

Johnston has been brought in as a potential replacement for Josip Juranovic, with the fullback keen to put himself in the shop window for a big move with his performances for Croatia in the World Cup.
