Former Manchester City striker Wilfried Bony scored for Newport County in a friendly against Swindon Town.

The Ivory Coast striker is best remembered for his stints with the Citizens and Swansea City, as well as his contribution in Ivory Coast’s triumphant Africa Cup of Nations campaign in 2015. In his heyday, he entrenched himself as one of the most lethal strikers in the Premier League.

In fact, after an impressive record of 26 goals and six assists in 54 Premier League matches for the Welsh giants, City parted ways with £28million to capture his services. However, six years after his move to the Etihad Stadium, he has returned to Wales to play for Newport County.

The Welsh club are currently languishing in 18th position in League Two. In fact, only seven points separates them from those dreaded dotted lines, which would see them tumble out of the Football League.

It is in precarious moments like these, you need a top goal-scorer to drag them to safety. And Bony may be just that as he signed a short term deal with County.

"We got in contact with the sporting director (Ted van Leeuwen)," Bony said to WalesOnline. "He told me 'yes, there is a possibility, I will do everything for you, give me some time and I will talk to my board, and we will see how it is going to be'.

"Lucky for me then I am here. [To] do what I love the most and that's playing football."

He also added, "I trained with Newport County, and I just want to thank them," he said. "They make me train with them all the time, so it was very important for me to keep fit until the moment arrived for me to be playing again.

"For the time, I'm not able to play for 90 minutes already, but in time, because I'm starting training already, I will very soon be playing 90 minutes."
