Tite has confirmed he is leaving his role as Brazil manager after the World Cup favourites crashed out of the tournament on penalties to Croatia on Friday.

The Selecao had been tipped to win the tournament and had a wealth of attacking talent to do so, including Neymar, Vinicius Jr, Richarlison and Raphinha.

However, it was not enough to break down Croatia - who are into semi-finals of the World Cup for the second time in a row. Neymar had scored in extra-time before Bruno Petkovic grabbed a late equaliser to send the match to penalties.

Rodrygo and Marquinhos missed their efforts while Croatia scored all four of their attempts to send Brazil packing.

And the manager is the first to fall on his sword, resigning just minutes after the match. Speaking in his press conference, Tite insisted it was always his intention to leave after the World Cup.

He said: "As I said, my cycle is over. I said it over a year and a half ago. I’m not a man of two words."

It is a position that Tite had held since 2016 after taking over from Dunga and won the Copa America with the Selecao in 2019. However, his record in the World Cup stands against him after crashing out of the tournament at the quarter-final stage in both 2018 and now 2022.

It remains to be seen who will take over from the experienced coach, who has coached the likes of Corinthians, Internacional and Atletico Mineiro over a career that has spanned over 30 years in management.

Brazil had been the tournament favourites going into the World Cup this year and lived up to that title when they demolished South Korea 4-1 in the first knockout round. But Croatia put on a fine defensive display while goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic was in sensational form, even pulling off a decisive save in the penalty shootout.

It means that the six-time champions have not won the tournament since 2002 and leaves many turning their attention to their South American rivals Argentina, where Lionel Messi is hoping to win the World Cup for the first time.
