Former Leeds United star Danny Mills has insisted only the reigning monarch and the Prime Minister are afforded as much scrutiny as the England manager - after the Three Lions crash out of Qatar
Danny Mills has insisted that only the monarch and the Prime Minister find themselves under more scrutiny than the England manager.
Questions have been asked about Gareth Southgate's future after England were dumped out of the 2022 World Cup by the reigning champion. The Three Lions fell on their sword against France, but ultimately lost 2-1 to their neighbours.
And appearing on a Sky Sports News panel, that was debating Southgate's future, Mills said: "The scrutiny, I've always said it's King or Queen, Prime Minister, and then the England manager is under the most scrutiny.

"Think of what happened to Graham Taylor, or even Bobby Robson, they were hounded at times by the press, constantly. It was just every single day: front pages and back pages, it was pure criticism of decisions about football.
"And that's the arrogance we have [expecting to win all the time]. Even before 2018, when it was disastrous, leading into that tournament we'd lost the manager; we'd lost the Euros to Iceland, and Sam Allardyce had come in and lasted one game.
"Then Gareth had come in - the expectations were lower than ever before, and then you get to a semi-final - 'oh complete failure we should have won that'."

Southgate's deal with the FA currently runs until the end of Euro 2024, which will be hosted in Germany.
However, The Three Lions could have a difficult path to Germany, having been drawn in the same qualification group as defending champions Italy, Ukraine, and North Macedonia.
