Fans joked that Kylian Mbappe would not survive Sunday League after being crunched in a challenge by Sofyan Amrabat.

The French forward blitzed past two Moroccan players on the touch-line 50 minutes into the World Cup semi-final clash at the Al Bayt Stadium.

Mbappe’s Olympic-style run saw him reach the edge of the Morocco box. But as the Paris-born star attempted to bamboozle with a trademark cut-back, he was met by Amrabat who had steamed back half the length of the pitch.

The combative defensive midfielder leapt into a challenge from several yards away, catching the ball first before his trailing leg wiped out his opponent. Mbappe then flung himself into the air before rolling around on the floor while holding his leg.

But viewers were bemused at the Frenchman’s reaction, having been left in awe of the ‘tackle of the tournament’. And the sheer force of Amrabat’s challenge was reminiscent of a typical grassroots football match back in England.

And another fan commented: “This sums it up. This is the best tackle of the tournament, by the best player of the tournament IMO.”

Mbappe would have the last laugh, however. Having played a part in France’s second goal with a mazy dribble, the mercurial talent repaid the favour with sumptuous nutmeg on Amrabat as he danced his way to another World Cup final.
