Rangers fans say the same thing as Aberdeen ‘googly’ from Duk beats Allan McGregor for Pittodrie equaliser

ABERDEEN maverick Duk scored a stunning free-kick to equalise against Rangers at Pittodrie - with a strike that left pundits lost for words.

Richard Foster, an ex-player for both the Dons and Light Blues, could only describe it as a 'googly' - but Rangers fans were far from impressed with their goalkeeper's positioning.

The stunner from the Portuguese forward - real name Luis Lopes - cancelled out Fashion Sakala's opener and sent the sides in level at the interval.

Many - including Foster's Radio Scotland colleague Willie Miller - questioned Allan McGregor.

The ex-Dons boss said: "It’s an absolutely magnificent strike but so unusual because the wall is lined up towards the left of the Rangers goal.

"Allan McGregor has got to be at his side – does he move to his left as Duk rifles it into the far corner?"

Foster though, wasn't having that and defended his former team-mate on BBC Sportsound.

"I don’t think you can save that Willie – he’s hit one of those googlies hasn’t he? One of those where he hits the valve and it moves all over the place. It dips over the top of McGregor’s head from what I could see.

"The way he lined up and ran up I thought no chance but he’s produced an absolute wonder-strike."

Few Rangers fans agreed with the former Ibrox defender though and called out McGregor over his stance.

One social media user wrote: "Great free kick by Duk, maybe Beale should be telling Wilson Rangers are in dire need for a keeper."

Another added: "McGregor should not be getting beat from that. Very poor."

The goalkeeper's view behind the wall was criticised by many, including: "Stand by McGregor having the worst possible positioning for every free-kick taken against us."

Another tweeted: "It's a good free kick but McGregor for some reason stands too far off his line. Other than the goal Sakala offers nothing."

One fan rued: "For his whole career McGregor seems to love standing at least two yards too far forward at free kicks, balls 20 yards out, obvious shooting position and he's three yards off his line, if he's stood in a normal position he takes one step to the side and don't think he even needs to dive."

Another added: "I love McGregor, he was my hero growing up, but it was obvious to all concerned that last season was a year too far. The fact we are still having this conversation on the cusp of 2023 is fully on the club for not removing him from the situation and this is the consequences."

The goalkeeper also came in for criticism from ex-Celtic striker Charlie Nicholas in a morning newspaper column.
