Aston Villa are interested in a transfer swoop for Udinese winger Gerard Deulofeu as Unai Emery targets new recruits to bolster his forward line this January window.

BirminghamLive understands Villa have enquired about Deulofeu's availability ahead of making a move for the 28-year-old. Emery worked with the former Everton star while at Sevilla, when he was on loan from Barcelona in 2014/15 and made 17 La Liga appearances that season.

Deulofeu is in the best form of his career at Udinese and has so far this term chipped in with nine goal contributions in 15 matches, after he netted 13 goals for the Italian club last season. His move to the Serie A came after Watford were relegated from the Premier League in 2020; the year which Villa staved off a swift return to the Championship.

Deulofeu could now leave Udinese this winter as he is open to a new challenge in the peak years of his career. He was linked with a return to the Premier League at the end of last season, but a move never materialised.

"At the moment, these are only rumours," Deulofeu told AS in the summer. "I admit that I would like to take a leap but everything has its process and I am very happy at Udinese. I am 28 years old and the best of my career is yet to come.

"Yes (this is the best season of my career) and I know why that is. Before I have been very inconsistent, now I am at a point in my life where everything I do has a meaning."
