Former Birmingham City has Lee Bowyer been tipped for a return to management with Portsmouth.

Pompey announced that the club had sacked Danny Cowley on Monday with the club sitting 12th in League One. Cowley joined the club, alongside his brother and assistant coach Nicky, in March 2021 and finished 8th and 10th respectively but had gone nine games without and leaves the club 12th in the table.

Bowyer is currently out of work after being sacked by Blues in the summer, bringing an end to his 15 months in charge at St. Andrew’s, where he was a hero during his playing days. Portsmouth chief executive Andrew Cullen said in a statement that the search for Cowley’s replacement would “commence immediately” and the former Charlton boss is regarded as a potential candidate by bookmakers.

Bet Victor has Bowyer at 14/1 to become Danny Cowley’s successor at Fratton Park. The 45-year-old ensured Championship survival for Blues in back-to-back seasons and has already tasted success in League One, guiding Charlton to play-off success in 2019. Speaking to talkSPORT in December, Bowyer admitted he is keen to return to the dugout.

“I want to get back in because what I do is good, I improve people and that's rewarding for me,” he said. "I don't have an idea, I'm quite open. Whether it's in this country, whether it's abroad, you go where it seems right. Whatever comes up, I'll speak to my family and we go from there. I do enjoy it.”

Former Wigan boss Leam Richardson is considered the early favourite to take over at Pompey (1/1). Three other ex-Blues bosses are also seen as outsiders for the job with Steve Bruce, Garry Monk and Chris Hughton all priced at 25/1..
