Giorgos Giakoumakis Celtic transfer exit hits roadblock as £5m Midtjylland limit puts breaks on switch

The Greek striker looks to be nearing a move away from Celtic Park but the Danish side could be set to pull out.

Midtjylland are interested in landing Giorgos Giakoumakis from Celtic – but first need to see if a January move is viable.

The Danish outfit have already made early contact with the Greek star’s camp over a transfer in this window. Midtjylland are looking to add more firepower in their bid to play in European competition next season but have to rise above their current seventh position in the Danish Superliga. The Danes have a number of striking options and a budget of around £5million to spend.

GIakoumakis is on their list of targets after his goal return in recent seasons with Celtic and VVV Venlo. Record Sport broke the story last month that talks with Celtic over a new deal had broken down and Giakoumakis had been left unsettled. The striker, who has 25 goals in 55 appearances for the Hoops, isn’t on half of what the top earners take home at Celtic Park and is looking for top dollar from his next deal.

Giakoumakis’ camp are now looking at other options and the Scottish champions are unlikely to stand in his way if they can make a decent profit on the £2.5million they paid to get him in the summer of 2021. The Greek has already been linked with Japanese side Urawa Red Diamonds and a possible move to the Middle East.

Ange Postecoglou has made it clear Kyogo Furuhashi is his main frontman but he is also looking at bringing in another striker this month. Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors claim they have an offer for their South Korean international Cho Gue-sung from Celtic, although it is for less than their valuation.

Fellow Korean side Suwon also claimed to have blocked Celtic’s move for Oh Hyeon-gyu, despite the player expressing his desire to move to Scotland. Hyeon-gyu is still hoping an agreement can be struck Postecoglou has done most of his incoming business early.

He has brought in Japanese pair Took Iwata and Yuki Kobayashi and Canadian World Cup star Alistair Johnston. There will also be outgoings with Croatia right-back Josip Juranovic and Giakoumakis the two most high-profile names that could depart.
