My first ever football game was Chelsea v Villa at the Bridge in the League Cup in 98, Vialli scored a hat-trick. I've been a Blue ever since.

Gutted this morning, loved Luca as a player and manager. He was loved by Chelsea fans and he loved us back. One of my favourite nights as a Chelsea fan was in Stockholm 1998 seeing us win our first European trophy in 27 years. RIP Luca

  14. 'There is no secret - it is hard work in everything you do'published at 14:31 GMT 6 January 2023

Bournemouth v Burnley (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

    Bournemouth

Bournemouth have won just four of Gary O'Neil's first 16 games as manager and the Cherries boss had to this to say on being under pressure: "I think as always you draw on experiences that you have yourself. Too much is made about my first managerial campaign. I have been involved in changing rooms my whole life. There is no secret - it is hard work in everything you do and you just keep performing to your maximum.

"Managers go through tough periods in their fourth or fifth jobs. It makes no difference, you will go through tough spells no matter how many times you do it. I am pretty sure if you spoke to all of them their response would be the same, that there is no secret - hard work, buckle down, control what you can control and come out the other side."

O'Neil added: "Anyone who has met me knows my only concern is the betterment of the football club. Not me or where I end up after, all I care about is that the club is in a good place and 'can we move it forward from where it was yesterday?'"

  15. 'We're aware of Burnley's technical and tactical strengths'published at 14:26 GMT 6 January 2023

Bournemouth v Burnley (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

    Bournemouth

On Saturday's opposition and Championship leaders Burnley, Bournemouth manager Gary O'Neil said: "It is a great competition. It's one where we want to win tomorrow, and against a fantastic team in the Championship which look like they are Premier League-bound next season, it's one that will be a good test for us. A team winning consistently can be hard to play against.

"Burnley play good football and dominate possession in the Championship," he added. "They look hard to beat, it's going to be a tough game and they certainly look like they'll be a Premier League team in the not too distant future.

"The players are well aware of the challenges - they always are. We're aware of Burnley's technical strengths and tactical strengths. The lads are aware of that, as they are with every game we play.

"You have a chance to perform and to be judged, that doesn't change with any game you play. Hopefully we'll send the supporters home happy."

I had the good fortune to live in Italy when Sampdoria stormed out of nowhere to win Serie A and will never forget a game against Napoli where Vialli and Mancini both scored truly unbelievable volleys. It's so sad to hear of his passing. Rest in peace Gianluca Vialli.

  17. 'There was just an aura' about Viallipublished at 14:19 GMT 6 January 2023

    Scott Minto
Former Chelsea and West Ham defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

"There’s probably not enough time to come up with all the stories of this great man. This is Gianluca Vialli, the guy we were watching on TV and in Italian football and the World Cup.

"He didn’t really speak any English when he arrived and he was reading children’s books, really starting from scratch. Within six months he was completely fluent - I’ve never seen that before from anyone. It sums up the mentality he had both on and off the pitch.

"To say he was charismatic doesn’t even do him justice. There was just an aura about him. I was only a team-mate of his for a year before I went off to Benfica after the 1997 FA Cup final. There’s people that you meet, that you don’t need to meet for a very long time to have a big impact on you.

"He wasn’t the tallest but he was good in the air. He was strong, he was well built, very lean but with muscle. He wasn’t overly quick but he was sharp. The first two yards are in the brain. He could just finish with both feet.

"He’s an incredibly humble guy. He’s this world class superstar. It’s an incredibly emotional time."

I had the pleasure to meet Mr Vialli when I was a child. He asked me who my favourite Chelsea player was while signing an autograph for me and I was too embarrassed to not say him. He smiled and laughed at me and said I was allowed to say Zola - I had his name on my back. A wonderful man, a terrific player and a desperately sad day.

  19. Palace must 'play with intensity to win'published at 14:15 GMT 6 January 2023

Crystal Palace v Southampton (Sat, 12:30 GMT)

    Crystal Palace

Speaking about opponents Southampton, who sit bottom of the Premier League, Vieira said: "Results are always harsh because results are important in our industry, so the pressure on Southampton is really big.

"We have to manage and deal with it.

"Look at the last four or five games they played, look at the quality of the games they played. In some of those they deserve more than nothing. The result doesn’t reflect the quality of the games they played.

"This is an all Premier League game so we have to be really concentrated, determined and play with intensity to win the game."

  20. No development on Zaha's contract talkspublished at 14:12 GMT 6 January 2023

Crystal Palace v Southampton (Sat, 12:30 GMT)

    Crystal Palace

On whether there has been any developments in Wilfred Zaha's contract talks, Vieria said: "You're asking the wrong person.

"We know the situation and we want to keep him. He's an important player for the club and he’s loved here.

"We have to wait and see what he will decide to do. What matters is the commitment he is showing in the games."

Asked about the possibility of Zaha being sold this month, Vieria added: "I hope not."
