Celtic in Cho Gue-Sung transfer twist as Hoops ‘outbid’ Bundesliga side with race for World Cup star heating up

ANGE POSTECOGLOU has already moved quickly to strengthen his Celtic side with three new arrivals before the January window had even opened.

Yoki Kuboyashi, Canadian World Cup star Alastair Johnston and Japan's Player of the Year Tokomi Iwata have all joined up with the Hoops - and they've now made their move for Cho Gue-Sung according to a report.

The South Korean forward netted an impressive double against Ghana in Qatar and his star has only continued to rise since the World Cup.

SunSport revealed last month that Ange Postecoglou was keen to lure the striker to Parkhead from K-League side Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors this month.

The Hoops boss is braced for bids for star duo Josip Juranovic, who wowed clubs far and wide with his World Cup performances with Croatia, and Greek striker Giorgos Giakoumakis after talks over a new deal broke down last month.

Cho could be a ready-made replacement should Giakoumakis move on from Parkhead this transfer window.

According to Football Scotland, Celtic have now made their move and have sparked a bidding war with German side FC Mainz.

The Bundesliga outfit launched a bid of just shy of £3m as they played their hand - but the report claims that the Hoops have now unleashed an offer that is MORE than what Mainz have tabled.

Postecoglou is a long term admirer of the striker, who netted against his former side Yokohama F. Marinos back in 2020.

Jeonbuk are now resigned to losing their star man who's found the back of the net 20 times this season, after an initial reluctance to let him go.

Celtic may well look to try and force a deal quickly with reports suggesting Giorgos Giakoumakis is close to completing a stunning move to J-League side Urawa Red Diamonds.

Reports in Japan claim a bid has been made and accepted and he is close to agreeing on lucrative terms with the Saitama club, who are owned and financially backed by huge Japanese company Mitsubishi.

Urawa Red Diamonds finished in a disappointing ninth place last season in the J League and new Polish manager Maciej Skorza is desperate to mount a league challenge this season and will be financially backed.

The former Legia Warsaw and Lech Poznan boss knows all about Giakoumakis, who had a spell in Polish football two years ago on loan at Gornik Zabrze.
