Neves sends Liverpool dig

Wolves captain Ruben Neves has fired a dig at the offside controversy surrounding the club’s FA Cup tie with Liverpool.

Julen Lopetegui’ s side took the lead through Goncalo Guedes after an horrendous mistake by Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson, before the home side equalised through Darwin Nunez. Liverpool then took the lead in the second half as Mohamed Salah, who had been stood offside, latched on to a ball that Toti Gomes had attempted to head clear.

The drama continued to unfold, though. New signing Matheus Cunha provided an assist for Hwang Hee-chan to bury Wolves ’ equaliser from close range - but Lopetegui’s side were ultimately forced into a replay after what looked to be the winning goal was given as offside.

Klopp makes Wolves goal admission

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says he understands why Wolverhampton Wanderers are "angry" about the VAR controversy at Anfield.

Wolves head coach Julen Lopetegui was left to rue a VAR decision not given due to the apparent unavailability of definitive footage which cost his side victory in Saturday night's FA Cup third round tie. With the score at 2-2 with nine minutes remaining Toti thought he had scored the winner, only for the visitors’ wild celebrations to be cut short by an offside flag.

The decision was checked but the on-field call could not be overruled due, according to broadcaster ITV , to there not being the correct camera angle. At the time Lopetegui was absolutely convinced it was a goal, having watched it back on a monitor in the dugout, and stood on the touchline making the VAR TV symbol.

Toti Gomes makes Liverpool point

Toti Gomes was left perplexed after Wolverhampton Wanderers were controversially denied a late winner in Saturday’s FA Cup tie.

Wolves appeared to have won the tie in the 83rd minute when Toti flicked Hwang Hee-chan’s shot past Alisson Becker, but their celebrations were cut short by an offside flag. The assistant referee deemed Matheus Nunes to be standing in an offside position when he received the ball in the build-up after his initial corner was cleared by Liverpool.

The officials apparently didn’t have the correct VAR camera angle to determine whether Matheus was in an offside position. Julen Lopetegui insists that one of Wolves’ "tactical cameras", which captured the whole situation, proves that Matheus was onside and that the goal should have stood.

“At the end I tried to speak with them and they said it was offside by a little bit, but I don't understand how,” a bemused Toti admitted. "At the end I saw the replay and still don't understand how it wasn't a goal.”
