Marco van Basten gives verdict on Wout Weghorst's chances at Manchester United

The Dutch legend is yet another name that cannot see the move working out for both parties this month.

Marco van Basten believes Manchester United are better suited to other attacking options amid their interest in signing Wout Weghorst.

The 30-year-old forward is keen on a move to Old Trafford, with the Reds keen to resolve the ongoing situation with Burnley and Besiktas.


With just Anthony Martial to choose from in the striker department this season, United have been heavily reliant on the goals of Marcus Rashford, with manager Erik ten Hag keen to bring in backup during this month's window.

''I have my doubts,'' van Basten told Ziggo Sport before comparing him to PSV Eindhoven’s forward Luuk de Jong.

''Take a look at Luuk de Jong. That is really a striker that you can play through the air. I don’t think Weghorst is very strong in that regard.

''He can score a header, but he is more of a boy who can do something with his enthusiasm and force.''

The former Ajax also warned that having too many players of the same nationality can sometimes cause internal problems and perhaps create unwanted rifts at the club.

''It can become dangerous if you have too many Dutch people and things are not going well,'' he added. You also saw that at Barcelona, when they had five Dutch people. Then it will work against you. Ten Hag has to be careful with that.''
