Former Cardiff City captain Sean Morrison has signed for Championship relegation rivals Rotherham United on a free transfer until the end of the season.

The 32-year-old ended an eight-year stint with the Bluebirds earlier in the month, after working his way back from an ACL injury picked up last year. He left the capital with nearly 300 appearances to his name, including a promotion to the Premier League back in 2018.

Morrison's contract expired over the summer, but he was placed on a return-to-play contract, and even played three games for City's under-21s over the last few months as part of his rehabilitation, with boss Mark Hudson previously indicating conversations were to be held over the player's future.

However, Morrison's departure was confirmed last week, and he's now become Rotherham's first signing of the January window.

He will wear the number 23 shirt in south Yorkshire, and could make his debut for his new club as soon as this weekend, with Blackburn Rovers the visitors to the New York Stadium.

Speaking shortly after completing his move, Morrison told the club's official website: "I learned about it just before new year. Got the call from my agent then not long after spoke to the gaffer and had a really good conversation. Obviously the situation I'm in, coming back from a long-term injury, I've been raring to go for a little while now.

"As soon as I spoke to the manager I got a vibe on what he wanted from me and it was an easy decision to come up here."

Millers boss Matt Taylor added: "Everyone at Rotherham United is looking forward to working with someone with such fantastic experience.

"Sean will be a welcome addition to the group and will add huge value both on and off the pitch. He will go straight in contention to feature this weekend against Blackburn Rovers."
