Rangers outcast Filip Helander ‘set to be offered career lifeline as European club keep tabs on rocked defender’

FILIP HELANDER could be set to leave Rangers at the end of the season.

Time is ticking for the Ibrox outcast to salvage his Rangers career after struggling with several injuries since arriving from Bologna in 2019.

And with his deal set to expire in the summer, it looks ever likely that he will find a new club for next year's campaign.

The Swede has at least one option on the table though with reports suggesting Malmo are keeping tabs on the defender ahead of his current deal expiring.

Helander came through the ranks at the Allsvenskan club and made his league debut aged 18.

He featured in their 2014/15 Champions League campaign and was nominated for the Allsvenskan defender of the year and Swedish defender of the year in 2014.

His performances earned him his move to Serie A with him joining Hellas Verona before leaving for rivals Bologna a season later.

And the Swedish side are interested in bringing him back to the club, according to Aftonbladet.

The outlet claim he could be "on his way" out of Rangers to join Malmo if both parties can agree on a pre-contract agreement.

Helander hasn't featured for the Light Blues since April last year through injury and will struggle for gametime when he does eventually return from his current foot problem.

Michael Beale has plenty of options at centre-back with Connor Goldson and Ben Davies forming a reliable partnership since returning from the World Cup break.

Leon King is pushing for a first team spot while John Souttar is nearing his injury return too.

Helander is far down the pecking order in the new Gers boss' plans and it's unlikely he will be offered a new deal to extend his stay.

Malmo endured their worst season in the league last year since 2009 as they finished 7th in the table.

It was a fall from grace for the 25-time winners after lifting the trophy in the previous two seasons.

It wasn't all bad news for the Swedish giants though as they won the cup for the first time since 1989, meaning they will have a crack at European football again this year.

They will enter the Europa Conference League at the second qualifying round.
