Leeds United took their Transpennine rivalry with Manchester United to another level of 'petty' when announcing the appointment of assistant head coach Chris Armas, according to Reds fans.

Armas, of course, worked under Ralf Rangnick at Old Trafford before reuniting with Jesse Marsch across in West Yorkshire on Wednesday. The pair had worked together during March's time in charge of New York Red Bulls before the American moved to Germany and RB Leipzig as an assistant coach.

Former USA international Armas became well-versed in the Red Bull system and ended up forming part of Rangnick's coaching staff at United during his short tenure. But United fans were quick to spot one minor dig at their club in Leed's statement announcing the appointment.

The Whites' announcement read Armas had worked previously at 'another Premier League club' - referring to his spell at Old Trafford. In a statement confirming the appointment on Wednesday, Leeds United's official club site read: "Armas spent two years in charge of New York Red Bulls, whilst also had managerial experience with fellow MLS outfit Toronto FC.

"Last season, Armas spent time as an assistant at another Premier League club, working under Ralf Rangnick."

Needless to say, reaction from both sides of the Pennines was mixed, with some fans seeing the funny side while others saw it as a petty jibe.
