Manchester United midfielder Charlie Savage has joined League One strugglers Forest Green Rovers on loan until the end of the season.

Savage, 19, progressed through the famed Old Trafford system and made his debut for the club in December 2021 when he was summoned from the bench in a Champions League group stage match against BSC Young Boys. His father, Robbie, even commentated on that game.

With short and long-term development in mind, United have sent the young prospect on loan. Everton hero Duncan Ferguson will be his manager.

After winning promotion last season, Forest Green are currently bottom of the third tier and decided to sack Ian Burchnall as manager. Ferguson, 51, replaced him as head coach at The New Lawn, and he will be able to call upon Savage for the run-in after his temporary switch was confirmed.

MEN Sport reported on Monday afternoon that United were expecting Savage to complete a loan transfer before the January deadline. Under contract until 2025, the academy graduate will be given some priceless game-time during his spell in Gloucestershire.

Despite being handed a first-term debut last season, Savage has not, yet, featured in a competitive matchday squad under Erik ten Hag after the Dutchman replaced interim manager Ralf Rangnick at the helm this summer.

Speaking to FGR media, Savage - who will wear the number 48 shirt - said: "I'm buzzing to be here.

"As soon as I found out Forest Green were interested, I just wanted to get down and get started. I loved the sound of the club and I actually came down here last season for work experience under Rob Edwards. I know the people and the place really well."
