Ex-Liverpool ace Emre Can has revealed that he had cancer surgery just after joining Juventus back in 2018.

The German midfielder left Anfield on a free transfer to sign for Juventus after four years in England and went on to make 45 appearances and win two league titles with the club. However, he has now explained how he was diagnosed with thyroid cancer by the Juventus medical staff just weeks after his arrival.

Can has admitted he will be forever grateful to the club's doctors for spotting the cancer. Juventus confirmed in October 2018 that Can was facing thyroid surgery.

A club statement at the time said he would “undergo clinical tests and investigations for a thyroid nodule that could also require surgical treatment”. After two months out following the surgery, he returned to action in December 2018.

Speaking to DAZN, via Football Italia, Can explained: “I had thyroid cancer and I needed to undergo surgery urgently. This has changed a lot in my life. You can have a lot of money, you can have everything, but health is the most important thing.

“It’s part of life and I suggest everyone undergo screenings, it doesn’t matter how healthy one thinks he is, if you find out about these things in time, you can act.”

He went on to add: “I am so grateful to Juventus doctors. They called me two months after my medicals with the club. I didn’t know what was going on, I didn’t even know what a thyroid was and I would never imagine I had cancer. The move to Turin was worthy, only just for this.”

Can remained at Juventus until 2020, when he completed a permanent move to German side Borussia Dortmund following an initial loan spell.

He has gone on to make over 100 appearances for the Bundesliga giants and was included in Germany's squad for the European Championships in 2021, having missed out on a place at the World Cup in 2018.
