Giorgos Giakoumakis in dramatic Celtic transfer twist as Atlanta move back ON with £4.3m bid 'accepted'

He was on the brink of joining Urawa Red Diamonds but it's claimed a new offer from Atlanta has met Celtic's demands.

Atlanta United have dramatically returned to the table with a new bid for Giorgos Giakoumakis - which has reportedly been accepted by the Parkhead club.

The Celtic striker had agreed terms on a move to the MLS side but their previous offer of a loan deal with a conditional obligation to buy was booted out the door. The Hoops instead accepted an alternative offer from Urawa Red Diamonds and Giakoumakis flew out to the Netherlands on Friday to undergo a medical with the J-League side.

He passed that and up until Saturday morning, it had seemed that would be his next move. But now SDNA are reporting that Atlanta have tabled a new bid worth £4.3m which has been accepted. It's unclear if it is an initial loan or an outright cash offer but Ange Postecoglou's team aren't thought to be happy happy with loaning him out unless there are significant assurances it would be made permanent.

Either way, it's claimed Giakoumakis will now renege on his move to the J-League and instead join the MLS side. The fee on the table sees Celtic make a tidy profit on the £2.2m they paid to sign him 18 months ago.
