Moment Willie Collum overrules VAR after Ryan Jack yellow card – minutes after Nicky Clark red – as pundit left baffled

WILLIE COLLUM may have created history at Ibrox today when its thought he became the first Scottish referee to overrule a VAR recommendation pitchside.

And that was good news for Rangers star Ryan Jack, who escaped with just his original yellow card for his challenge on Saints' on-loan Celtic star Adam Montgomery.

That's presumably despite VAR Nick Walsh recommending to Collum that a red card should have been the punishment.

There's only certain areas which VAR can get involved in, with one of them being serious foul play or potential red card incidents.

And what made the whole thing more controversial was that Collum and VAR had just taken the decision minutes earlier to send off Nicky Clark, a decision that was hotly disputed by manager Callum Davidson.

Davidson was shown a yellow card by Willie Collum for protesting about the affair, with Collum deeming that Clark was deserving of a straight red card for catching Jack with a high tackle.

To compound matters further, St Johnstone had gone behind to a disputed handball penalty decision against Jason Brown.

While Brown's arm was in a high and potentially unnatural position, Borna Barisic's cross had flicked off Connor Goldson in fairly close range.

James Tavernier steered in the penalty, with Finnish midfielder Glen Kamara adding a second goal during the second period.

Watching back in the BBC Scotland studio, former Scotland women's star Leanne Crichton said: "I think when you look at both challenges, they are either both yellow or both red.

"I think if Jack had got the red card off the back of NIcky Clark, Clark catches the ball but his momentum takes him through and he catches Jack high.

"But I still think Ryan Jack is out of control.

"The point of contact it is probably just below the ankle, but it's a lunge, its a straight leg, his studs are showing.

"I think it ticks as many boxes as the Nicky Clark challenge so I think there has top be consistency.

"Either two yellows or two reds!"
